Umbilicoplasty is a surgical procedure to change the appearance or shape of the belly button.
There are several possible variations, including changing a protruding belly button to a non-protruding belly button, correcting scarring caused by surgery or piercing, removing a lump caused by a hernia or altering the shape of the belly button to achieve a certain shape. It is sometimes performed as part of a tummy tuck or lower body lift operation, but is also performed alone.
Usually, umbilicoplasty results are permanent, but the effect can be reversed if you gain significant amounts of weight or become pregnant following surgery.
Will I have visible scars?
The surgeon will generally make the necessary incisions within the belly button. The resulting scars are usually well concealed and are not outwardly visible.
What are the risks?
Overall umbilicoplasty is a safe procedure and complications are rare. However like all cosmetic procedures there are risks involved. There are general risks associated with surgery as well as risks specific to this procedure. Your surgeon will discuss these with you during your consultation. These include infection, an irregular or a “lop-sided” appearance of the belly button (which may require further surgery to correct), excessive scarring, blood or fluid collection under the skin and reaction to anaesthesia. |
