A thigh lift is a surgical procedure that smoothes, firms and reshapes the thighs by removing excess sagging skin and fat and lifting/tightening the remaining tissue.
Excess tissue around the thighs is often the result of weight fluctuations or aging, but can also be hereditary. A thigh lift is often performed at the same time as a buttock lift or as part of a lower body lift. Following the procedure there will be permanent scars.
If you are planning a future pregnancy or planning to lose a significant amount of weight, it is probably best to postpone your thigh lift. If you smoke you may not be a suitable candidate, you should discuss this with your surgeon.
Is liposuction an option?
Sometimes fat is removed as part of a thigh lift. This will be excised (cut out) or in some cases treated with liposuction. If you have heaviness in the thighs caused by excess fat, but the skin is tight, liposuction alone may be a better option.
Will I have visible scars?
Thigh lift scars vary significantly. Their position and length depends on the area of the thigh to be treated (e.g. inner, outer, upper, full length) and the degree of correction. They typically start in the groin and may be limited to that area or may extend either downward wrapping around the back of the thigh or up around the hip. They are placed in strategic locations where they can be hidden by most types of clothing and swimsuits, however they may be extensive.
What are the risks?
Like all cosmetic procedures there are risks involved. There are general risks associated with surgery and risks specific to this procedure. Your surgeon will discuss these with you during your consultation. Common problems include small fluid collections that may have to be drained or small areas of the scar that open. Other problems are rare and include sensory nerve damage, tissue death, blood clots, severe infections and problems related to anaesthesia. |
