Facial fillers are injections used to “fill out” lines, wrinkles and uneven areas of the face.
They are also used to add fullness and definition to areas such as the lips and cheeks, and to improve the appearance of recessed scars (e.g. acne pits). There are many different types of fillers – synthetic, natural and even your own tissue taken from another part of your body.
What will fillers not do?
Fillers will not stop the aging process. By adding fullness they can give some lifting to the general facial structure. However, they cannot achieve the same results as a face lift. You should discuss your goals and expectations at your consultation.
How do I know which facial filler is right for me?
There is no “one size fits all”. Some are synthetically produced, others are derived from animal or human sources. They include hyaluronic acid fillers, collagen fillers and injections using your own fat. There are many different brands. The right option will depend on several factors including the area to be treated, possible allergic reactions, durability of results, costs and ease of administration.
How long will they last?
Duration of results varies, starting from about 3-4 months. Fat injections have the potential to be more permanent. They use your own tissue and require a more extensive procedure (see Fat Transfer).
How are they different from muscle relaxing injections?
The easiest way to visualise the difference is to think of a crease as a valley between two mountains. Muscle relaxing injections prevent the mountains from being pushed together, whereas fillers fill in the valley. The most effective treatment depends on the severity and cause of the crease. They are often used in combination.
What are the risks?
When properly administered complications from fillers are uncommon. Risks vary depending on the specific filler and include bruising, swelling, lumpiness, under or over correction and skin discoloration. There is a small risk of allergic reaction. Infection and skin loss are also possible, although extremely rare. |
